Five Behaviors of a Cohesive Team™
“Not finance. Not strategy. Not technology. It is teamwork that remains the ultimate competitive advantage, both because it is so powerful and so rare.” ~ Patrick Lencioni, author of The Five Dysfunctions of a Team: A Leadership Fable
Tackle team challenges and improve your team’s effectiveness by working through The Five Behaviors™ of a Cohesive Team: Trust, Conflict, Commitment, Accountability, and Results.
Trust: At the foundation of a cohesive team is trust, a deep-seeded trust where people can reveal their most vulnerable self and not be afraid of judgement. When people practice trust vulnerability, they are able to say “I’m sorry” or “reach out for help” and quickly turn around negative situations into a win for the team.
Conflict: Conflict is healthy when people engage in healthy debate about ideas and concepts instead of personalities and intentions. Cohesive teams challenge each other in order to mine for the most innovative and effective solutions in the shortest amount of time.
Commitment: When people feel that their ideas are heard, commitment to team decision grows. Clarity and buy-in are keys to team commitment.
Accountability: Holding each other accountable is one of the hardest practices to maintain on a team. But when people trust and feel safe, they can call out their peers on performance or behaviors that might hurt the team’s productivity.
Results: Great teams ensure that everyone is focused and is doing their best to achieve the team goals.
Five Behaviors in Action
Get a team scorecard. The Five Behaviors of a Cohesive Team™ process starts with a team survey where team members confidentially respond to questions about each of the Five Behaviors. A ranking of each of the behaviors, measures the team’s level of trust, practice of engaging in healthy conflict, commitment, accountability, and shared results.
Resolve team issues. The survey results reveals team strengths and weaknesses and helps the team to take a deeper dive into issues that may be holding back team effectiveness.
Set team agreements. Create agreements on team behaviors to boost team effectiveness.
Measure team progress. re-assess team progress with the Five Behaviors of a Cohesive Team Progress Report, celebrate gains and make adjustments for improvements.

Strategic Planning Process
We believe that participation matters in strategic planning. Our sessions focus on creating an environment where healthy dialogue starts and is sustained with an intentional roadmap, and engaging visually graphic tools that guide the conversation. Seasoned facilitators effectively manage the behaviors in the room, ensuring robust dialogue, checking on agreement and commitment levels, all the while focusing on moving towards the group’s targeted goals.
Strategic Planning in Action
TH!NK’s approach to facilitation centers on the following beliefs:
- The level of trust in the room impacts the quality of dialogue and discussion in the room.
- Different perspectives must be given a voice in order to identify and flesh out all possibilities.
- Spirited discussions can lead to greater buy-in when commitments and agreements need to be made.
- Facilitation should be visual and engaging.
- Design with the end in mind.

Sarah Tenney, Blue Export Group
“I am so fortunate to have been introduced to THINK! Consulting through my employer during our ongoing leadership development training sessions. After seeing the results and impact in my work place, Sarah and Cindy were approached to provide a strategic planning framework for the Association of Fundraising Professionals Aloha Chapter in Hawaii in early 2012. After several revisions, the board accepted the planning process and over 10 months our 4 year strategic plan was adopted and implemented.
I feel compelled to relay how client centric Cindy & Sarah both are. Besides moving their schedules to accommodate our eccentric group, they met at odd hours due to time zone differences and found venues to help us. They provided the momentum necessary to establish milestones and pivotal changes necessary to get the right people together to discuss issues or updates. Their support provided tools & survey options to enhance the engagement and reporting of feedback and most importantly helped decipher & segment for discussion the important areas. Our group is off to a great start, and I feel it could not have happened without their professional approach and consistent commitment to providing value that helped us take steps forward for improvement and implementation to serve our members and the community.”
