5 Workplace Habits to Take Into 2026 (and the 5 You Should Leave Behind)

5 Workplace Habits to Take Into 2026
(and the 5 You Should Leave Behind)

If you’re looking ahead to 2026 and thinking about how you want to grow at work, you’re in good company. A new year is a powerful moment to pause, reflect, and focus on the habits that truly make a difference. After all, a 1-degree shift each day may feel small—but over a year, it creates meaningful change.

At TH!NK, we’ve seen firsthand how small behavioral shifts can transform teams. We recommend choosing just one habit to focus on, because sustained attention is what makes change stick. To help you get started, here are five habits to carry into 2026—and five you can leave behind.

Habit #1: Intentional Communication

Communication is one of the most important leadership skills, but also one of the easiest to overlook. Start by making time to communicate with clarity: avoid vague Slack messages, reinforce expectations, and check for understanding.

One TH!NK client tried a simple exercise: she wrote down her expectations for a new initiative, shared them with the team, and asked everyone else to write down theirs too. Suddenly, the fog lifted. Misalignment disappeared. Collaboration felt easy – like everyone had finally started reading the same book.

Leave behind: assuming people “just know” what you mean. Sadly, no one at work is psychic.

Habit #2: Increase Team Engagement

Team engagement doesn’t require a massive culture overhaul – it starts with small, intentional moments. Acknowledge someone’s idea. Ask a follow-up question. Make space for those who don’t naturally speak up. And create environments where people feel safe to challenge assumptions or propose new ideas.

One manager we worked with started ending each agenda item by saying, “Before we move on, it would be great to hear from someone who hasn’t spoken yet.” That one sentence significantly increased participation from quieter members and ultimately improved the team’s decision-making.

Leave behind: defaulting to “we’ve always done it that way”. It’s the most hated phrase in the history of workplaces. Stop using it.

Habit #3: Give and Receive Feedback

In 2026, ditch the one-sided “download” approach to feedback and make it a true conversation with your team – one that not only addresses areas for growth but also spotlights and amplifies each person’s unique strengths.

A leadership cohort we recently worked with used 360-degree feedback for the first time, and participants were amazed by how differently peers, direct reports, and managers perceived their strengths and blind spots. Because the process was structured and safe, the team didn’t tense up; they opened up. The result? More self-awareness, more honesty and more team growth.

Leave behind: waiting until something becomes a problem before you bring it up.

Habit #4: Lead with Curiosity

Curiosity can be a superpower that instantly makes leaders better. Instead of immediately offering solutions, try asking more questions. Be curious about your people, not just their tasks. And remember, you don’t need to have all the answers.

A few of our favorite curiosity-building questions:

  • What possibilities haven’t we explored yet?
  • If all constraints disappeared, how would we approach this differently?
  • What’s one question we haven’t asked that could shift our perspective?
  • What have we tried before that didn’t work, but might be worth another look now?

Curiosity invites new thinking, builds connection, and makes problem-solving way more interesting.

Leave behind: jumping to conclusions.

Habit #5: Invest in Continuous Learning

The best leaders we know are the ones who never stop learning. But professional development doesn’t have to be a multi-day investment. Growth can happen in tiny, powerful moments.

At TH!NK, we encourage leaders to try:

  • Short, high-impact learning bursts: one WorkSmart module on Catalyst or a quick leadership podcast – which take less than an hour but help you grow bit-by-bit.
  • Deeper certifications like DiSC or The Five Behaviors that help you understand people, teamwork, and yourself (while earning CEUs).
  • Start a learning circle (what we lovingly call the TH!NK Tank) where leaders meet monthly to share challenges and walk away with fresh ideas.

Leave behind: treating professional development as a once-a-year checkbox.
