Workplace Wellness Starts with Leadership
Workplace Wellness Starts with Leadership
Every year, International Self-Care Day on July 24 reminds us of the importance of taking care of our personal health and well-being. But self-care isn’t just an individual pursuit, it’s also a leadership responsibility. The well-being of a workplace starts at the top, and leaders play a vital role in creating environments where people can thrive.
Why Employee Well-Being Matters
When teams feel supported, they perform better, collaborate more effectively, and navigate challenges with greater resilience. Beyond being the “right thing to do,” prioritizing well-being leads to real business results.
According to Gallup’s 2023 State of the Global Workplace Report, employees who are engaged and experience high well-being are:
- 59% less likely to be actively looking for a new job
- 23% more likely to feel energized at work
- 66% more likely to thrive in life overall
At the team level, the impact is even more striking: Highly engaged teams see 21% higher profitability, 17% higher productivity, and 41% lower absenteeism.
The takeaway? Well-being and performance are tightly connected. A culture that promotes care, trust, and support not only improves individual satisfaction, but it also fuels collective success.
Leaders Can Take Action
Creating a culture of wellness doesn’t require a massive overhaul. In fact, small, intentional actions can have a big impact:
- Regular 1:1 check-ins that go beyond task lists. Ask how people are really doing.
- Encourage time off for rest, vacation, or mental health days. People come back more refreshed and focused.
- Promote wellness programs your company may already offer. Think gym reimbursements, health screenings, wellness challenges, or even healthy snacks in the breakroom.
These efforts send a clear message: We care about you, including your health, your happiness, and your life outside of work.
How TH!NK Integrates Wellness into Leadership Development
At TH!NK, we believe wellness and leadership are intertwined. That’s why we weave well-being into all our leadership development programs:
- Midday Movement Breaks – During full-day sessions, we incorporate yoga and stretching to help participants recharge and stay present.
- Mindset Shifts – We start coaching sessions with simple but powerful prompts like: “What are you grateful for?” to foster positivity and perspective.
- Reflection on Rituals – We ask leaders and teams to consider: What rituals center you? What helps you reset? These conversations encourage healthy habits, both personal and shared.
And on a personal note, we also walk the talk. Our co-founder, Sarah Kalicki-Nakamura, is deeply committed to the same self-care principles we encourage for our clients. She recently joined Be Well Studio, a wellness center in Las Vegas, as part of her own investment in well-being. Whether it’s recharging with the studio’s biocharger, relieving stress in the sauna, or sharpening mental clarity with red light therapy, these practices help her stay grounded and energized. After long work trips, a visit to the studio is her go-to remedy for jet lag, ensuring she shows up each day with energy, empathy, and full presence for our clients.
A Call to Leaders
This International Self-Care Day, we invite leaders to reflect: What am I doing to support the well-being of my team?
Leadership isn’t just about driving results – it’s about creating space for people to do their best work and live their best lives.
Because when people feel well, they lead well, collaborate well, and contribute more meaningfully.
